Planks[fn 1] are common blocks used as building blocks and in crafting recipes. They are one of the first things that a player can craft in Survival and Adventure modes. Two categories of planks can be differentiated: flammable Overworld Planks made from tree logs, and nonflammable Nether Planks made from huge fungi stems.

Obtaining

Breaking

Planks can be broken by hand, but using an axe speeds up the process.

Usage

Planks can be used for building structures, as crafting ingredients, and as fuel. Crimson Planks and Warped Planks, however, cannot be used as fuel; you must convert them into tools, sticks, or other things.

Crafting ingredient

Planks are used in many crafting recipes. Doors, fences, fence gates, slabs, stairs, boats, trapdoors, pressure plates, and buttons must be crafted from planks of the same type, and the crafted result depends on the type used. For other products, planks of different types can be mixed freely and the wood types in the product is indeterminate. Crimson and Warped planks cannot be used to make boats.

Fuel

Overworld planks can be used as a fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per block. Nether planks (crimson and warped planks) cannot be used as fuel.

Repairing

Planks are the repair items for the wood tier, and thus can be used to repair the following items in an anvil:

Trivia

  • Many items and blocks crafted using Planks or Sticks have textures that most resemble Oak, regardless of the type used to craft them. On the other hand, Item Frames and Fletching Tables resemble Birch, Cartography Tables and Grindstones resemble Dark Oak, and Barrels resemble Spruce, while Smithing Tables, Composters, Chests, Trapped Chests, Jukeboxes, Note Blocks, Stonecutters, and the backs of Paintings don't resemble any wood-type.
  • Jungle, Acacia, Crimson, and Warped are the only wood-types that don't have a utility block based on them.
  • Crimson Planks and Warped Planks do not naturally generate, and are available only if crafted by a player.
  • Crafting an Overworld log into planks is more efficient of a fuel source than simply burning a log, as one log burns only 1.5 items, but four planks burn 6.

Notes
