Gold ore is a rare mineral block found underground.
Deepslate gold ore is a variant found in the deepslate layer of the world below Y=0[upcoming: JE 1.18 & BE 1.18] and within the deepslate and tuff blobs between Y=16 and Y=0[upcoming: JE 1.17], whenever gold ore replaces deepslate or tuff.

Obtaining
Breaking
Gold ore drops as an item if mined by an iron pickaxe or higher. If mined by any other tool, it drops nothing. Unlike most ores, gold ore does not require Silk Touch to be obtained, and instead always drops itself.
In Java Edition 1.17[upcoming], gold ore drops raw gold instead of itself, unless mined with a Silk Touch pickaxe. It is affected by Fortune enchantment.

Natural generation
Gold ore can generate in the Overworld in the form of blobs. Gold ore attempts to generate 2 times per chunk, in blobs of size 0-13, from levels 0 to 32 in all biomes.
Gold ore also attempts to generate 20 times per chunk in blobs of size 0-13, from levels 32 to 79, within any type of badlands biome, or within a chunk that is at least partially occupied by such a biome. On average they generate 12.4 ores per chunk.
In Java Edition 1.18[upcoming] gold ore attempts to generate 4 times per chunk, in blobs of size 0-13, from levels -63 to 30, in all biomes. It is most likely to be found around layer -17, becoming less common toward either end of the range. Gold ore is also less likely to be exposed to air; 50% of ore blobs[verify] that would generate exposed do not generate. Gold ore can replace stone, granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, and deepslate. Any gold ore that replaces tuff or deepslate will become deepslate gold ore. The generation in badlands biomes is unchanged.
In Bedrock Edition 1.17[upcoming], deepslate gold ore generates instead of regular gold ore in deepslate blobs.
Usage
Smelting ingredient
Name | Ingredients | Smelting recipe |
---|---|---|
Gold Ingot | Gold Ore or Deepslate Gold Ore + Any fuel |
Piglins
Piglins become hostile toward players who mine gold ore, even if the player is wearing golden armor. Piglins also run toward any gold ores on the ground, and inspect it for 6 to 8 seconds before putting it in their inventory.
Note Blocks
Gold ore can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sound.
