Stairs are blocks that allow mobs and players to change elevation without jumping.

Obtaining

Breaking

Wood stairs drop themselves as items when broken with any tool, or with no tool, but an axe is fastest. Non-wood stairs drop themselves as items only if broken with a pickaxe.

Usage

Placement

File:Stairs reconfiguration.png
Stairs ReconfigurationLeft: Original facing when separate. Right: Changed shape when adjacent (top: inner corner; bottom: outer corner).

To place stairs, use a stairs item while pointing at a surface facing the space the stairs should occupy. When placed, a stair orients itself with the half-block side closest to the player.

Stairs can be placed either right side up or upside-down:

  • Pointing at a block top or the bottom half of a block side places the stairs right side up.
  • Pointing at a block bottom or the top half of a block side places the stairs upside-down.

Stairs change their shape to join with adjacent stairs (of any material):

  • When a stairs' half-block side is adjacent to the side of another stairs, the stairs' full-block side wraps into an "L" shape to join the other stairs (it creates an "inner corner").
  • When a stairs' full-block side is adjacent to the side of another stairs, the stairs' full-block side shortens to join the other stairs' full-block side (it creates an "outer corner").

Right side up stairs do not join with upside-down stairs and vice versa.

Walking

Walking up stairs is faster than jumping up the same distance. Walking up a stairway doesn't cost any exhaustion from the player's hunger bar, compared to 0.2 exhaustion per jump. Therefore, walking up stairs doesn't make the player hungry at all.

Behavior

Generally, the solid faces of stairs are handled as solid blocks.‌[Java Edition only][1] Due to this, transparent blocks that need to placed on an opaque surface can be placed on these faces.

Fuel

Wooden stairs can be used as a fuel in furnaces, smelting 1.5 items per block.

Note Blocks

Wooden stairs can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass" sound.

Stone stairs can be placed under note blocks to produce "bass drum" sound.

This section is missing information about MCPE-1219, MCPE-20677, and that one time console edition had cut sandstone stairs due to a bug.
Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.
Java Edition Infdev
2010062932px 32px Added oak wood stairs and "stone" stairs.
Wooden stairs currently do not burn.
32px 32px Both icon textures for stairs in the inventory are simply flat planks and cobblestone textures.
Java Edition Alpha
v1.0.132px 32px Stair inventory icons now changed to render image of a solid two step model, which are currently glitched.
v1.2.0previewThe orientation of stairs is now determined based on the direction the player faces while placing them. Before this version, stairs would determine their orientation based on the surrounding blocks (changing if they were changed).
v1.2.2Stairs now have the odd property of being transparent to light; when placed one or more spaces above the ground with air beneath, sunlight or other light sources now shine through and light the blocks beneath or behind the stairs exactly as if nothing opaque are present between them.
Other atmospheric effects such as snowfall do not penetrate stair blocks, making them an unusually effective material for creating roofing that kept weather out, but still let daylight in.
Snow cannot accumulate on top of stair blocks, grass is able to grow on the block directly underneath a stair block, and grass disappears if a stair block was placed on top of it. Any stair block placed in Alpha v1.2.0_02 to Beta 1.5 would keep this property in later versions until it or an adjacent block is changed or removed, causing a lighting update.
Java Edition Beta
1.0Items have been given in-game names. The two types of stairs have been named "Wooden Stairs" and "Stone Stairs", respectively.
1.6Test Build 3Wooden stairs and fences are now flammable.
The light transparency of stairs from Alpha v1.2.2 has been fixed.
32px 32px The inventory icon for stairs has been reversed to show a more recognizable figure.
1.732px 32px The models of stairs have been changed. The texture of stone stairs has been changed due to the cobblestone texture change.
1.8Pre-release32px 32px Added brick and stone brick stairs.
Stone brick stairs drop stone bricks, brick stairs drop bricks.
32px 32px On some GPUs, a major lighting bug is present which causes the insides of stairs blocks to appear completely black.
Dropped stair items no longer appear larger than normal blocks.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease32px Added nether brick stairs.
32px They can appear similarly black.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5Brick, nether brick and stone brick stairs no longer appear black on the inside.
32px The texture of brick stairs has been changed due to the bricks texture change.
32px The texture of wooden stairs has been changed due to the planks texture change.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 6The stair block now drops itself when mined, instead of a block of its source material.
Wooden stairs are broken faster using an axe.
All stone-type stairs take much shorter to destroy, and the breaking time depends on the pickaxe's material.
1.2.112w08a32px 32px 32px 32px 32px Added upside-down stairs.
Before they were added, edited data values of 4 through 15 would create invisible stairs that could be walked through; these higher values are now used for upside-down stairs.
32px 32px 32px 32px 32px The models of stairs have been changed.
1.3.112w21a32px 32px Added sandstone stairs.
12w22aStone stairs now generate in jungle temples.
12w25aRedstone dust, repeaters, torches, levers, pressure plates and rails can now be placed on stairs positioned upside down.
32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px Added wooden stairs for the remaining three wood types (birch, spruce and jungle).
12w26aAdded crafting recipes for birch, spruce and jungle wood stairs.
12w30aUpside down stairs can now be placed by generally looking at the top half of the side of a block, rather than strictly the underside of a block.
1.4.212w34aStairs now automatically change shape into corner stairs depending on location.
12w39aStairs now interact properly with lighting.
Smooth lighting on stairs is now currently slightly bugged.
1.513w02a32px Added quartz stairs.
13w05aThe lighting stairs has been fixed when Smooth Lighting is on.
13w05bStairs no longer stop sprinting.
1.7.21.732px 32px Added acacia and dark oak stairs.
1.7.413w48a32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px 32px The models of stairs have been changed.
1.814w17a32px 32px Upside down sandstone and quartz stairs each have now had their top and bottom textures switched.[2]
14w31a"Stone Stairs" have been renamed to "Cobblestone Stairs".
14w32a32px Added red sandstone stairs.
1.9June 22, 2015Jeb reveals purpur stairs on Instagram.
15w31a32px Added purpur stairs.
Stairs are now rotated 90° in the inventory.
15w43aSpruce wood stairs acting as corners of a table now generate within igloo basements.
15w44bDue to model changes, stairs now display incorrectly stretched or squashed textures.[3] These may be GPU dependent as only corner stairs are distorted on some computers.
15w45aStair textures are no longer incorrectly stretched. However they are now incorrectly mapped.[4]
15w46aStair texture mapping has now been corrected. It is not known, however, if stairs from this version onwards look at all different from those before 15w44b.
1.1116w39aOak, birch and dark oak wood stairs and cobblestone stairs now generate in woodland mansions.
1.1217w15aTorches can now be placed on the full-block sides of stairs.
Iron bars, glass panes and fences adjacent to the full-block side of a stair now visually connect.
Carpet and snow layers can now be placed on top of upside-down stairs.
April 17, 2018Dinnerbone confirms that Java Edition 1.14 is to contain many new stairs and slabs.
